The Rural Development Strategy (RDS), sets out a comprehensive response to the development needs of the Falkland Islands rural hinterland, known locally as Camp. The RDS complements the Economic Development Strategy (EDS) ensuring that Camp makes a strong contribution to, and benefits from, the growth of the Falkland Island’s economy. It aims “to maintain Camp in order to encourage a well-populated, economically and socially sustainable community integrated within the national economy”. The strategy is made up of five priorities:
- The Environment
The strategy has been designed to address the needs of Camp over a five year period (2012-2017). The strategy provides a route map for the future development of Camp, identifying the policies required to achieve sustainable growth. The annual Action Plan contains details on projects and budgets which will be delivered to achieve the strategic objectives.
Here at FIDC we are already delivering actions contained within the strategy. The RDS is incorporated into our higher strategic goal of increasing the self-sustainability of the Falkland Island's economy. Our corporate structure reflects our commitment to rural development with the RDS Coordinator role being central to our operations. We have been helping to achieve numerous objectives of the RDS and have been assisting with the following:
- Increase the value of economic activity in Camp.
- Increase the economically active population in Camp.
- Broaden the range of services available in Camp.
- Increase the accessibility of both public and private services for Camp residents, so as to improve the overall quality of life in Camp.
- Manage, protect and conserve the natural environment.
We have undertaken numerous projects to achieve these objectives, including introducing an Import Substitution Programme, improving the road signage in Camp, producing a tourist map for Camp and recruiting a RDS key worker to operate within Camp.
