The Falklands Islands Wool Company Ltd to manage proposed new top-class wool storage and handling facility.
Following the recent Expressions of Interest advertised locally, FIDC are pleased to announce an Agreement in Principle between Falkland Islands Development Corporation and the Falklands Islands Wool Company Ltd (WoolCo) whereby WoolCo will manage the proposed new Wool Warehouse facility when built.
Currently going through the planning stages, the new construction is expected to be sited opposite the entrance to the Chandlery Supermarket. At some 2000sq meters in size, it will incorporate a warehouse, offices and staff welfare amenities and is designed with the new Responsible Wool Standard very much in mind.
This easily-accessible development will replace the ageing unit on FIPASS, whose end-of-life has concerned the wool industry for some time. FIDC has sought a practical solution for the Islands’ needs and one which is – as far as possible - ‘future-proofed’ for the ever-more crucial standards of quality, traceability and sustainability.
In a joint statement from FIDC & WoolCo, FIDC’s Acting Managing Director Louise Ellis says
“We are very pleased to reach agreement with the Board of WoolCo - a highly skilled and competent local organisation who have many years’ experience in working for our wool producers. It has been a challenging two years in the scoping and planning, and one of the key objectives for the new warehouse was to be accessible to the entire Falklands producer community. This initiative will achieve that aim.”
Keith Knight, Chairman of WoolCo agrees
“The decision will bring confidence to the entire wool industry on the Falklands, not only our members, that there is an assured future for our product. There will be many benefits to the new building especially at this exciting time when Falklands wool producers work towards compliance with the internationally recognised Responsible Wool Standard”.
